Alibaba A.I. Labs Announces Strategic Collaboration with MediaTek on IoT Initiatives

Alibaba Launches IoT protocol for Tmall Genie-controlled Smart Home Ecosystem

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Alibaba A.I. Labs, which leads the development of Alibaba’s consumer artificial intelligent (AI) products, and MediaTek, a global fabless semiconductor company, today announced a strategic collaboration in Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives including smart home protocols, customized IoT chips and AI smart hardware, with the aim of fostering the development of a connected world in the IoT era.

The two parties also announced the first Smartmesh connectivity solution in China that supports the latest many-to-many Bluetooth mesh technology, in an effort to speed up the adoption of this technology in smart home settings.

The solution, which is based on the Labs’ self-developed IoT protocol named IoTConnect and the Bluetooth chip co-developed by both parties, enables smart home devices to automatically pair with Tmall Genie, the Lab’s first voice-controlled smart assistant, leading up to a Tmall Genie-controlled smart home ecosystem.

Miffy Chan, Head of Alibaba A.I. Labs, commented: “We are excited about partnering with MediaTek to explore collaboration in the IoT ecosystem. Our AI and cloud computing capabilities, along with MediaTek’s cutting-edge technology in chip design, provide unique advantages to our connectivity solutions for smart homes, offering real benefits to consumers in China and paving the way to a more connected world through innovation.”

Jerry Yu, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Home Entertainment Business Group, MediaTek said: “MediaTek is thrilled to partner with Alibaba A.I. Labs in building up a voice-controlled smart home ecosystem. This follows our collaboration in delivering the great success of Tmall Genie X1.”

“The smart home market is undergoing tremendous growth as technologies advance. With MediaTek’s strength in connectivity and baseband, computing and multimedia, coupled with Alibaba’s leading advantages in cloud computing and AI, we are confident that the collaboration will mark a milestone in the development of the IoT era,” Yu added.

The partnership comes on the heels of the successful collaboration on Tmall Genie, for which MediaTech provides chip technology support. Alibaba A.I. Labs launched the smart home assistant in July last year, with an aim to provide brand new interaction experiences for Chinese consumers. Over one million Tmall Genie devices were sold in China during Alibaba’s Global Shopping Festival on November 11 last year.

IoTConnect is an open connectivity protocol based on Bluetooth mesh standard for smart hardware and smart home appliance manufacturers. Smart devices using the protocol can be automatically paired with Tmall Genie. The protocol aims to promote unified connectivity standards among smart devices, and hence lower the cost in developing connected devices and foster the development of voice-controlled smart home ecosystem.

The Smartmesh solution supports the latest Bluetooth mesh networking and Bluetooth 5 functionality set up by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the body that oversees the development of Bluetooth standards. Customized Bluetooth SoCs (system-on-chip) – MT7581 and MT7583 – for the solution are featured with Bluetooth smart mesh technology, automatic pairing, fast connection and low-power consumption. The two SoCs will be ready for the market in the second half of this year.

Talisen Launches Enterprise Energy Management Software in Dubai

St. Louis Company’s global licensing effort starts strong with Etihad ESCO

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — In October of 2017, Talisen entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ESCO) of Dubai to license Talisen’s Enterprise Sustainability Platform (ESP) solution for the Dubai building retrofit market. What makes this market so unique for Talisen is that Government of Dubai has set strategic targets to reduce electricity and water consumption by 30% by the year 2030.

Talisen Network Operations Center

Why Dubai? Talisen gained some experience in Dubai, just before the 2009 recession. The building market was booming and in need of solutions that could integrate multiple building automation systems. Talisen was on the verge of its first deal there but pulled out of the region when the recession hit the Middle East hard in 2009.

After some market research in 2015, George Brill, CEO of Talisen Technologies, and his business associate Mohan Menon teamed up to form Talisen International. Their plan was to re-enter the UAE and Middle Eastern market by securing a strong and capable licensee. Dubai seemed like the best place to start because the Emirate had such a well-defined strategy for large-scale electricity and water reductions (Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy – DIES 2030). In addition, Etihad ESCO, a fully owned subsidiary of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, appeared to be an ideally placed partner.

Etihad ESCO has a responsibility to manage energy conservation projects involving up to 30,000 buildings over the next 13 years. However, Etihad ESCO did not have the software solution to manage the data for such a large building retrofit program. That is where Talisen came in.

“Etihad ESCO was established in 2013, as an initiative by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, to create a viable market in Dubai for building retrofits using energy services companies (ESCOs). At Etihad ESCO, customers are at the core of our operations,” said Ali Al Jassim, CEO of Etihad ESCO.

“The establishment of the Measurement and Verification (M&V) Centre is a reflection of Etihad ESCO’s commitment to utilizing the most advanced and innovative technologies to ensure we deliver value to our customers. While the M&V Centre is an essential expansion of Etihad ESCO’s services, it will also enable us to utilize Talisen’s experience and expertise in large city-wide energy data management and its latest Internet of Things (IoT) enabled technology platform, ESP, to closely monitor the performance of all client assets under its scope,” said Mr. Ali Al Jassim.

Brill expects the Dubai project to be in full swing by January 2018 and is excited about the prospect of being involved in such an innovative project with the Etihad ESCO team. Brill refers to something Mr. Ali Al Jassim said, “Enterprise Energy Management is a ‘Team Sport’. The ESP platform and M&V Centre will provide an ‘arena’ where all stakeholders can come together to realize the best possible savings for each project.”

Talisen Technologies, Inc. was founded in 1991 and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Arab ministers to resume Jerusalem meet Feb. 1

Arab foreign ministers will resume meetings as of February 1st to follow up on repercussions of the recent US decision on the holy city Jerusalem.

The Arab League said in an official memorandum, addressed to member states, that the planned meeting would be held at the league headquarters and would be complementary to the session held on December 9th.

The ministers, during the December meeting, considered the session as “open,” and tentatively decided to resume it in a month to re-examine the issue and ponder prospected steps such as holding an extraordinary summit.

The league said in the memo that the next meeting would be in light of decisions taken at a “mini meeting,” held in Jordan on January 6th.” Participants in the December gathering called for intensifying efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict politically, emphasizing necessity of establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

They had also affirmed dire consequences of Washington’s decision, noting the historic and religious status of the city. US President Donald Trump has recently “recognized Jerusalem as capital of Israel,” also expressing intention to shift the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
