DHL Global Forwarding names Amadou Diallo as CEO for Middle East and Africa

Diallo will apply over 20 years of expertise in logistics and corporate integration to expanding the region’s freight connections and partnerships

DUBAI, July 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Global Forwarding, the leading international provider of air, sea and road freight services, has appointed Amadou Diallo as CEO for the Middle East and Africa region. In the new role, Diallo will focus on expanding and deepening the region’s international trade connections, as well as incorporating innovative logistics technologies into DHL’s offerings to Middle Eastern and African customers.

Amadou Diallo, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding Middle East and Africa

In his most recent role as Executive Vice President of Value-Added Services and Integrated Logistics with DHL Global Forwarding, Diallo oversaw a portfolio of innovative services including Saloodo!, DHL’s new digital platform. Founded in 2016 and starting in 2017 the platform brings a new and powerful digital solution which increases and maximises efficiency in all steps of transport handling between shippers and transport providers.

As the CEO of DHL Freight from 2011 to 2016, he was responsible for the performance and long-term strategic development of the unit, a role he was well-placed to perform with his experience in leading freight forwarding operations in Africa and South Asia Pacific since 2008. Diallo also brings with him a wealth of expertise in logistics network-building, most notably as Managing Director of DHL’s integration with supply chain operator Exel – now DHL Supply Chain – in 2005.

“Amadou’s 20 years of expertise in logistics and corporate integration throughout several regions in the world make him the right choice to lead our operations in the Middle East and Africa,” said Tim Scharwath, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding and Freight. “Not only does he intimately understand the cultural and economic intricacies of the region, but he also brings with him a truly global perspective of logistics innovation and economic co-operation that put him in good stead to help our customers fully capitalize on the region’s growth.”

“The Middle East and Africa still have huge potential for trade growth,” said Diallo. “Intra-regional trade in Africa only makes up 18% of the continent’s trade,[1] creating sizable opportunities as disposable incomes rise continent-wide,[2] while the Middle East’s shift from reliance on natural resources[3] bodes well for significant growth in value-added exports. As the region gains in economic importance – not least due to its strategic value to initiatives like China’s Belt and Road[4] – businesses in the Middle East and Africa need comprehensive freight connections, flexible capacity and durable partnerships more than ever before if they wish to grow alongside these opportunities.”

“Logistics innovation plays a critical role in any end-to-end supply chain integration, and will feature as a priority in how we go about delivering new services with greater speed, efficiency, and sustainability,” Diallo added. “We hope to not only build our regional network’s connectivity to global opportunities through new cross-border agreements and partnerships, but also give our customers the world-class technologies and processes they need to really challenge and overcome overseas competitors.”

DHL Express Cuts Shipment Times by Up to 48 hours with New Bahrain-Jeddah Flight

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, April 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ —

  • New connection is the first to provide direct transport and clearance of non-document express shipments between Bahrain and Jeddah
  • Jeddah gateway to support growing consumer trade between Saudi Arabia and US, European markets
DHL Express cuts shipment times by up to 48 hours with new Bahrain-Jeddah flight

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider, has launched a new daily flight connecting Bahrain Hub with Jeddah, one of its gateways in Saudi Arabia’s western region.

The new route will see DHL Express fly seven times a week between Bahrain International Airport and Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, with each Boeing 757 flight carrying up to 22 tons of cargo. Doing so makes DHL the first international express provider to offer direct movement and clearance of non-document goods through its DHL Express Worldwide service between Bahrain and Jeddah, reducing transit times by anywhere from 24 to 48 hours for customers shipping to Saudi Arabia’s Western Provinces.

“Bahrain forms a key node connecting Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia to other markets like China, the Kingdom’s top export and import destination[1]; and the European Union, where air freight volumes have grown by more than 50% since 2011,[2]” said Nour Suliman, CEO, DHL Express Middle East and North Africa. “This new route has allowed us to reintroduce Worldwide Parcel Express services after 8 years, at a time when e-commerce and growing regional affluence are causing demand for cross-border consumer shipments to literally soar.”

This brings the total number of flights into Saudi Arabia to up to 21 per week, with the Bahrain-Jeddah connection further enhancing the transit time at Saudi Arabia’s main express gateway in Riyadh. The new connection allows DHL customers to order pickup of non-document shipments as late as 5pm for same day dispatch, with DHL handling all package movement and clearance from the point of pickup. The route also supports growing volumes of repaired and returned goods between Saudi Arabia and producers in United Arab Emirates, USA and the European Union, primarily in the energy, technology, and life science sectors.

Jeddah is one of Saudi Arabia’s fastest growing cities, due largely to a steady flow of investment to build its infrastructure and economy[3], while Bahrain’s strategic location and streamlined logistics infrastructure[4] make it a critical entry point for shipments to and between countries in the Arabian Gulf.

“Imports and exports to and from Saudi Arabia have been increasing in the past few years and show no signs of cooling off, particularly with the US and within the Middle East and North Africa region,” said Bachi Spiga, Head of Operations, Middle East and North Africa, DHL Express. “This new route will provide much-needed delivery capacity and agility not only to Jeddah and the Western Provinces, but also indirectly to the many other Gulf states for which Saudi Arabia acts as a trade hub.

“As intra-regional trade and demand for consumer goods continues to grow, supported by heavy regional investment in logistics-intense sectors like life sciences[5] and technology,[6] we intend to continue improving the speed, frequency, and quality of service of deliveries throughout the region with market-leading connections like our new Bahrain-Jeddah flight.”

“This investment is timely and supports Saudi Arabia’s transformational blueprint known as Vision 2030, of which one of its pillars is to transform the strategic location of the Kingdom into a global hub connecting three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa; and turning the Kingdom into an epicenter of trade and logistics, and a gateway to the world,” said Faysal El Hajjami, Country General Manager, Saudi Arabia, DHL Express.

Bombardier Transportation Gets Riyadh’s Metro System Rolling With DHL

– DHL to deliver 47 Bombardier train sets from production site in Sahagun to Saudi Arabia for Riyadh’s new metro line

– Bombardier selected DHL for expertise with large break-bulk cargo across its global shipping network

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ —  Each of Bombardier’s new trains for Riyadh Metro will have already travelled more than 14,000km before it reaches its destination in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The first of the trains arrived in Riyadh in late 2016, marking the successful start of a multi-year forwarding agreement between manufacturer Bombardier Transportation and DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL Group. Managed by the DHL Industrial Projects team which handles very large break-bulk and complex project logistics, the agreement will see DHL deliver 47 train sets for Bombardier Transportation, a subsidiary of global aerospace and transportation leader Bombardier, to be used on Riyadh Metro Line 3, one of six lines being established by Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh.

Bombardier Transportation selected DHL Global Forwarding based on its global scale and track record in safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of large “break-bulk” cargo — items that, due to their size or shape, must be loaded and unloaded without using standard shipping containers. A global leader in rail technology, Bombardier Transportation offers the broadest portfolio in the rail industry and delivers innovative products and services that set new standards in sustainable mobility. Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, the company’s products and services operate in more than 60 countries, with an installed base of over 100,000 vehicles worldwide.

“Bombardier has partnered with DHL for many years to deliver highly sensitive aerospace shipments all over the world, allowing us to see their professionalism and expertise with complex logistics projects first-hand,” said Spokesperson from Bombardier Transportation for Project Management of Riyadh. “With the first of our Riyadh Metro trains arriving on-time and without any quality issues in Riyadh late last year, we have no doubts that DHL will continue to replicate these results for the rest of the partnership, allowing us to deliver state-of-the-art rail technology and infrastructure to the people of Riyadh.”

Under the agreement, DHL Global Forwarding ships each train set via its ocean freight network from Bombardier Transportation’s production facilities in Sahagun, Mexico, direct to the port of Dammam in Saudi Arabia. DHL Global Forwarding also handles last-mile delivery of the trains to the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), working with Bombardier Transportation engineers to guarantee swift and efficient movement of each train set to its deployment location.

“Riyadh’s citizens will soon rely on these trains to transport them safely and quickly around the city, so it is essential that we take the utmost care with the sensitive electronics and components that make up each unit,” said Nikola Hagleitner, CEO of Industrial Projects, DHL Global Forwarding. “Through our years of experience with shipping extremely large break-bulk cargoes all over the world, we understand that every project of this nature is unique, and we have taken pains to minimize risks to both the ADA’s schedule and Bombardier Transportation’s capital investment.

Building on the longstanding relationship with Bombardier’s Aerospace division, Reg Kenney, President, Global Engineering and Manufacturing, DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation commented: “It is a privilege to be trusted once again with transporting Bombardier’s technology and we look forward to continuing the success that we have experienced in delivering the first trains of the Riyadh metro network.”

DHL and SOS Children’s Villages Partner the Ministry of National Education and UNESCO to Extend the GoTeach Program with Math, Physics, and Innovation Olympiads for Madagascar’s Youth

Olympiads will focus on engaging and developing skills amongst Madagascar’s secondary level students nationally

UNESCO and Madagascar’s Ministry of Education celebrate eight years of DHL-SOS Children’s Villages’ partnership at awards ceremony
ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar, March 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ —

DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, and SOS Children’s Villages, an independent, non-government child welfare organization, have partnered the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and Madagascar’s Ministry of Education to launch two new Olympiads aimed at raising the country’s skills in science, mathematics, and innovation.

The Olympiads are initiated as part of the GoTeach program, the corporate responsibility initiative run by DHL and non-profit organization SOS Children’s Villages that has improved youth education and vocational skills in developing regions worldwide. One Olympiad will test secondary students’ mathematics and physics skills, while the other will require participants to create an innovative design or product using recyclables, emerging technologies, or “fablab” materials typically employed in small-scale digital production.

DHL expects more than 1,500 young Madagascans to compete in the Olympiads, for a range of prizes including PCs, tablets — and the chance to have their innovation funded to completion by DHL.

“GoTeach has made invaluable contributions to the skills and career opportunities available to Madagascar’s young people since DHL and SOS Children’s Villages began their work here eight years ago,” said Paul Rabary, Madagascar Ministry of National Education. “These new Olympiads will create greater awareness and enthusiasm amongst young Malagasy for critical elements of their education that will have lasting effect on their later life.”

The launch comes as UNESCO and Madagascar’s Ministry of Education acknowledge the team’s work over the past eight years with formal awards for five of the initiative’s key leaders (see Notes to Editors). Since commencing worldwide in 2011, the DHL-SOS Children’s Villages partnership has engaged with up to 450 young Malagasy every year through a range of mentoring programs, job forums, and vocational training seminars. To date, 36 Malagasy youths have received internships with DHL, with 20 of them translating into full-time employment opportunities with the company.

“One early participant in our mentoring program went on to complete an internship in DHL’s IT department, which gave her valuable IT knowledge that has helped gain the trust of her employer, who now gives her responsibility over the company’s website,” said Mamy Rakotondraibe, CEO of DHL International Madagascar. “So far, we’ve seen our mentees successfully enter all manner of professions from legal assistants to pastry chefs, using the skills that they learned and practiced during their time with us to create a hope and future for themselves and their families.

“The new Olympiads will further encourage Madagascar’s youth to hone the technical and problem-solving abilities that, as we’ve seen in the past, often significantly enhance the economic prospects that they may one day achieve.”

“The GoTeach partnership has shown commendable resilience through often challenging education conditions in Madagascar, including some of the lowest enrolment and completion rates amongst students in all of Africa,[1]” said Fanja Ratsimisetra, General Secretary of UNESCO. “DHL and SOS Children’s Villages have remained committed to keeping a growing cross-section of Madagascan youth actively engaged with the schooling system, giving thousands of young people much-needed skills and career opportunities. It gives UNESCO great pride to continue working with DHL and SOS Children’s Villages to bring hope and a sense of purpose to Madagascar’s young people through simple, practical measures like the new Olympiads.”
