The Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, Ambassador Muhammad Bahr Al-Ulum, affirmed that the government has made great efforts to facilitate the safe return of the displaced people through a set of measures and procedures.
A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today stated that the Ambassador participated in the Security Council session that was held to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on Iraq, and to listen to the briefing provided by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert.
Bahr Al-Ulum gave a speech that began by praising the efforts made by Plasschaert in support of Iraq for the period covered by the report of the Secretary-General, indicating: that the Iraqi government has made great efforts to facilitate the safe return of the displaced people through a set of measures and procedures, including the creation of conditions that enable them to return safely voluntarily to their home regions. “
He pointed out that, the Iraqi government is racing against time to implement its obligations by providing security, combating terrorism, and confining weapons in the hands of the state, and the importance of continuing cooperation because terrorism is still waiting for opportunities, as happened in Baghdad and Erbil recently.
The Ambassador added that “the priorities of the Iraqi government are to intensify efforts to confront the Corona pandemic, to confine weapons to the state, to strengthen the rule of law, and to draft an exceptional budget that strengthens the ability to face financial and economic crises, and to launch and sponsor a comprehensive national dialogue to fulfill the demands of the demonstrators.”
He said, “the government is proceeding with conducting elections, which is one of the most important objectives in the government curriculum, indicating the government’s willingness to provide all the requirements that fall upon it and to provide a safe environment for holding fair elections that meet international standards.”
He continued, “Iraq seeks to strengthen friendly and brotherly relations with all countries, and to continue regional and international cooperation, by working to find common grounds for cooperation with all of Iraq’s friends and partners in accordance with the requirements of common interests, and this is reflected in Iraq’s clear efforts to settle all outstanding issues, with the State of Kuwait to enhance stability in the region. “
Bahhur al-Ulum also affirmed the need to respect the sovereignty of Iraq and support efforts to stabilize the region, reiterating Baghdad’s commitment to protecting diplomatic missions and the sanctity of diplomats.
He expressed Iraq’s aspiration for the Security Council’s support for the Iraqi government in facing the challenges, especially the Corona pandemic, the financial and economic crisis, and effective cooperation in combating terrorism, and monitoring early elections, to enhance citizens ’confidence and ensure standards of integrity and transparency in the elections,
in which the biometric registration achievement rate has reached more than 14 million voters, equivalent to 56% of the total Iraqi electorate .
