French President Francois Hollande considered on Friday that the election of General Michel Aoun as head of the Lebanese republic was a “historic event for the friends of Lebanon,” adding that this election constitutes a guarantee for the hopes of the Lebanese people.
“Lebanon can still be a model of the Middle East,” Hollande said in a congratulatory letter he sent to Aoun today.
“By your election, a new page is opened for Lebanon, which needs, more than any time before, strong institutions to face challenges resulting from the regional situation, whether from the terrorist threat or from the humanitarian crisis Lebanon is facing due to the war in Syria,” he added, hoping a national unity government would be formed in the nearest time possible.
Aoun also received a cable from Queen Elizabeth of England, who confirmed aspirations to permanent excellent ties between the UK and Lebanon.
For her part, German Chancellor Angela Merkel hailed, in a cable to Aoun, the latter’s election as president, highlighting the importance of forming a new government the sooner the possible for the sake of stability and peace.
“The government of German is determined to provide you with support and to offer you cooperation,” the Queen indicated.
In turn, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, congratulated Aoun in a cable, hailing his election as a “positive step towards stability and prosperity in Lebanon.”
He also hoped reconciliation would lead to further steps through the political process.
“I would like to establish a fruitful relation with your Excellency to enhance and develop ties between our countries,” Erdogan stressed.
Moreover, Aoun received similar cables from Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Senegalese President Macky Sall, Cuban Prime Minister Raoul Castro, Kuwaiti Crown Prince Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, and Bahraini Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman al-Khalifa.
