CAIRO, The Arab Parliament, the legislative body of the Arab League, welcomed on Saturday the UN General Assembly resolution to renew the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
“The historic voting for the resolution with overwhelming majority signals the commitment of the international community to the legitimate rights of the Palestinian refugees,” said President of the Arab Parliament Mishaal Al-Selmi in a press release.
“The voting constitutes a decisive response to the attempts of some countries to terminate the activities of the UN agency,” he pointed out.
“Founded under UNGA Resolution 302 (1949), UNRWA delivers a noble message in providing essential services for millions of Palestinian refugees across the Middle East,” Al-Selmi said, reiterating the support of the Arab Parliament to the Agency.
Delegates of 170 countries voted for the yesterday resolution while those of Israeli and the United voted against, and Canada, Cameroon, Guatemala, Vanuatu, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Nauru abstained.
