Ashura rituals stampede kills 16 people in Iraq’s Karbala

BAGHDAD, At least 16 people were killed and 75 others injured in a stampede in a major shrine in the Iraqi city of Karbala, as worshippers gathered to commemorate the Shi’ite holy day of Ashura.

The stampede occurred as worshippers were performing Ashura religious rituals, the Iraqi health ministry said, pointing out that paramedics rushed to the scene to whisk the injured to a nearby medical facility.

Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims from around the world converge each year on Karbala.
