BAGHDAD, The Iraqi National Security Council recommended on Sunday to take proactive measures to redress possible repercussions of the US military withdrawal from Syria.
A government statement said that the council discussed at a meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, several topics, most notably US decision to withdraw from the Syrian territory.
“The government is carrying out its duties to protect the security of the country and it is taking preparations and anticipating events to prevent any possible damage to the repercussions of the resolution,” Abdul-Mahdi said according to the statement.
He pointed out that the US side renewed its commitment to cooperate with Iraq and its continued support for the Iraqi security forces and that Washington informed Baghdad of the decision in the latest contact with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a telephone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister two days ago that Washington was committed to fighting terrorism in Iraq; following the announcement by US President Donald Trump officially withdraw his troops from Syria.
