Bin Fahad meets U.S. Secretary of Transportation, visits DoA, EPA

WAM Washington, 29 March 2013 (WAM) — Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, and Chairman of Emirates Authority for Standardization ‘&’ Metrology (ESMA), discussed with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood prospects of joint cooperation.

The meeting aimed to boost mechanisms of action for adopting sustainable initiatives in transport and vehicle sectors, developing technical specifications and rules, and for introducing best practices and renewable energy sources. The transport sector is a key contributor to national economy and an important facilitator of trade flow between the UAE and other partners.

Bin Fahad said the UAE was interested in harnessing the U.S. best practices in transport research and technology for developing the sector.

The two sides agreed to expand their joint cooperation through a memorandum of understanding that advances the transportation sector and protects consumer in line with the highest international safety standards.

While in Washington, Bin Fahad visited the Department of Agriculture (DoA) where he acquainted himself with the U.S. research and studies on conservation of the environment, and biological safety of man, plants and animals.

The Department expressed its readiness to provide technical and technological assistance as well as professional training opportunities for Emiratis in U.S.

universities and research centres.

The minister also visited the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA)where he was briefed on programmes on management and rationalisation of household water and energy consumption. The two sides showed interest for concluding a set of cooperation agreements for exchange of knowledge and expertise.
