Britain condemns Israel’s plans for new West Bank settlements

LONDON, Britain on Thursday condemned the Israeli authorities’ approval of the construction of new settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

The announcement by Tel Aviv to build some 2,800 housing units in the settlements in the West Bank is an unacceptable and disappointing decision, British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt said in a press statement.

Building settlements is an illegal act and a breach of the international resolution, he added.

The move also raises questions regarding Israel’s commitment to any agreement with Palestinians in the future, he noted.

Burt called on the Israeli government to cease such acts, saying they undermine opportunities for peace in the region.
