China on Friday urged the US to remain restrained on trade protection and obey multilateral trade rules, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks at a news briefing in Beijing when asked for comment on US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum products.
Trump said in Washington on Thursday that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent for aluminum, in a move he said would protect US industries.
“China has stated its position on many occasions. If other countries follow the practice of the US, it will have a serious impact on international trade order,” Hua said.
“China urges the US to use trade protection tools with restraint and comply with multilateral trade rules so as to make a positive contribution to international trade order,” she added.
