China voices regret over US tariff decision

TOKYO, China expressed deep regret on Tuesday over the US’ decision to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

“We feel deeply regretful over the decision. China will be forced to take synchronous countermeasures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests as well as the global free trade order,” a Commerce Ministry spokesman said.

“The US additional tariffs have brought new uncertainties for bilateral consultations,” he said. The ministry made remarks after the administration of US President Donald Trump made an announcement on Monday to impose 10-percent additional tariffs on USD 200 billion worth of Chinese products from Sept. 24, and take other escalating tariff measures. “We hope that the US. side recognizes the potentially harmful consequences of such an action and timely rectify the situation with convincing means,” the spokesman said. Beijing has already warned that it will take necessary countermeasures depending on the US tariff action, expected to impose additional tariffs on US imports of USD 60 billion.
