CAIRO, Egypt has welcomed the ceasefire recently announced by Libya’s warring parties, describing it as a first step towards a political settlement to the civil conflict.
Egypt welcomed the truce and every effort exerted to stop bloodshed in the neighboring Arab country, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a press statement on Sunday.
It voiced Egypt’s support to a comprehensive solution the crisis to help retain unity and security of Libya and its neighboring countries as well as the Mediterranean countries.
It, however, noted that the fighting against extremist groups in Libya must continue, and called for firm stances against external parties supporting such groups through sending foreign fighters to Libya.
For the success of a political settlement, existing militias had to be dismantled, the foreign ministry underlined.
It also called for restructuring the presidential council and fairly distributing national wealth.
