Egypt’s court sentences Libyan to death on killing police officers

CAIRO, An Egyptian military court on Sunday sentenced Libyan citizen Abdulrahim Al-Mesmari to death and 22 other defendants to life over a deadly 2017 attack in the Western Desert.

The court also sentenced 10 other defendants in absentia and acquitted 20 others, Egypt’s Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

They were accused of forming and joining a terrorist group in Libya, and targeting some police and army personnel, the agency added.

The defendants killed premeditatedly 11 Egyptian policemen who were carrying out raids on the group’s hideout in Al-Wahat Al-Bahariya, in the Western Desert, in October 2107, it noted.

The defendants also held other police officers and stolen forcibly their weapons and ammunition, it pointed out.

The attack took place in October 2017, killing 16 police officers and a conscript, and wounding 13 others.
