Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said on Tuesday that the fire that gutted warehouses of the electoral commission was premeditated.
Initial probe into the stores’ blazes in the district of Al-Rasafah revealed it was intentional, he said at a news conference, pledging to identify, locate the culprits and prosecute them.
He however put the blame on the buildings’ guards, noting that the police located benzene residues at the scene. He also revealed that security camera were damaged ahead of the incident.
Al-Abadi expressed opposition to re-holding the elections, except with an order from the federal court, calling on the political parties that won the polls to continue consultations for forming a new government.
Authorities on Monday ordered detention of three police officers and an employee at the commission, in relation to the fire.
