EU calls on UN member states to respect SC resolution on Darfur

The European Union Thursday called upon all UN member states to abide by and implement the resolutions adopted by the Security Council under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, notably UNSCR 1593 (2005), referring the situation in the Darfur region of Sudan to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and required Sudan to cooperate fully.

“Based on information we received, President Omar Al-Bashir (of Sudan) visited Russia on 14 July,” said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a Declaration on behalf of the 28 EU member states.

She reiterated the EU’s full support and respect for the ICC and its key role in the promotion of international justice.

The ICC based at the Hague, the Netherlands, issued a first arrest warrant against Al-Bashir in 2009 and a second arrest warrant in 2010 for crimes against humanity related with the situation in Darfur.
