EU condemns church attack in Philippines

BRUSSELS, The European Union (EU) Sunday condemned the bombing during mass in the Cathedral of Jolo in the southern Philippines earlier today in which 20 people are reported dead and dozens injured.

“A human tragedy, this is also an attack against the basic right to practice one’s religion,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

She added that the EU “fully supports the Mindanao Peace Process and last week’s plebiscite on greater Bangsamoro regional autonomy. The EU plans to continue such support in the future.” The EU spokesperson was referring to the referendum in which voters approved the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in majority-Muslim areas of southern Philippines.

The referendum followed a peace deal between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
