EU condemns Myanmar for imprisonment of journalists

BRUSSELS, The European Union Friday condemned court decision in Mynamar earlier today to confirm the conviction of two reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo to seven years imprisonment.

“It is a missed opportunity to right a wrong. It is another setback to media freedom, the public’s right to information and the rule of law in Myanmar,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

“The ruling casts serious doubt over the independence of Myanmar’s justice system. The ruling is based on laws that run contrary to international human rights standards,” it said.

As during every hearing of the initial trial, European Union and EU Member States diplomats were among the many international observers at the appeals trial and followed the proceedings closely, it noted. The EU statement added that the issue has continuously been raised with the Myanmar government, and called on President of Myanmar to promptly address this injustice.
