EU regrets US decision on Iran oil sanctions

BRUSSELS, The European Union Tuesday expressed regret over the decision by US President Donald Trump on Monday to end exemptions from sanctions for countries still buying oil from Iran.

“We regret the US’ announcement yesterday not to renew oil waivers,” Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, told a news conference in Brussels.

“This further risks underlining the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the Iran nuclear deal), which is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, which was endorsed unanimously by the UNSC, and it is also critical for regional and global security,” she said.

“We in the EU will continue to abide by the JCPOA as long as Iran continues with the full and effective implementation of its nuclear-related commitments,” she added.

The US administration announced Monday that the oil waivers for China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey would expire in May.
