BRUSSELS, The European Union (EU) on Monday called for peace negotiations in Afghanistan to continue a day after US President Donald Trump announced that he had cancelled talks with the Taliban after the killing of an American soldier in Afghanistan.
“We have taken note of the latest developments regarding the peace negotiations on Afghanistan,” Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, told a news conference: “During the current situation we believe that all parties continue to do the necessary work to move towards a long lasting peace with a balanced agreement on the account of all Afghan people,” she said.
The spokesperson also called for a ceasefire and to an end to hostilities in the country. “It is important to look forward to the presidential election that will be taking place at the end of September (in Afghanistan),” she added.
