EU welcomes Iraq elections as key step towards democracy

BRUSSELS, The European Union (EU) Sunday welcomed the first parliamentary elections held in Iraq yesterday after victory over the IS, as “a key step forward in the construction of Iraq’s democracy and long-term stability.

“Despite some regrettable isolated reports of violent incidents, the work of the Iraqi security forces and electoral authorities resulted in an orderly ballot, which allowed the Iraqi people to exercise their democratic rights in peace and security,” said Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement tonight.

The EU called for vote counting to be completed speedily and transparently, and to address claims of irregularities through the available procedures and ultimately leading to the swift formation of a representative government, responsive to the needs and aspirations of the Iraqi people.

“The EU will remain a strong partner and supporter of Iraq, and is looking forward to continue working with the new government with a view to the stability, security, inclusive democracy and prosperity that all Iraqis deserve,” it added.
