France coach Didier Deschamps said Tuesday they have achieved their goal to be on top of Group C despite their goalless clash against Denmark, which also advanced to round of 16.
“We have reached our goal and the most important thing for us was to top the group. It has not ended up a very exciting match because the Danish team were satisfied with a draw as it meant they would qualify,” Deschamps said in a post-game statement.
He said he was satisfied with the outcome.
“We didn’t need to take risks in the match though as this result was ok for everyone. We tried to get a win but the last 15 minutes was, shall we say, a ‘neutral’ kind of match,” he added.
He said they needed to be prepared for more tough challenges in the next stage.
Denmark coach Age Hareide said one point was enough for his team to qualify.
“We just needed a point and were up against one of the best counter-attacking teams in the world,” he added.
“Our goal was to progress to the last 16 and we had a tough group – one of the toughest in the competition,” said Hareide who commended Peru who beat Australia 2-0 earlier.
The coach praised his team as “very disciplined, and they sacrificed everything to take us on to the next stage of the competition.
