PARIS, France on Monday recognized Juan Guaido as an interim President of Venezuela after an ultimatum ended for Nicholas Maduro to announce a new presidential election.
“Venezuelans have the right to express themselves freely and democratically,” French President Emmanuel Macron said on his Twitter account.
“France recognizes Guaido as interim president to implement an electoral process,” Macron added.
The French President stressed support to the International Contact Group, established with the European Union in this transitional period.
French Minister for European Affairs Nathalie Loiseau said on Sunday that her country would recognize opposition leader Guaido as interim president of Venezuela if Maduro did not announce presidential elections by evening.
