France urges approved Lebanon gov’t to implement reforms

PARIS France on Wednesday urged Lebanon’s newly approved government to undertake “deep and ambitious reforms” to meet the demands of the Lebanese people, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Noting that the Beirut Parliament had approved the new government’s policy statement on Tuesday, Paris said the executive must now “act rapidly to meet the economic, social and political expectations expressed by the Lebanese for several months.” The statement underlined the demands of the International Support Group for Lebanon, which met in Paris last December, and called for “deep and ambitious reforms by Lebanese authorities, notably in matters of transparency in the economy, economic and financial sustainability and the fight against corruption, and independence for the courts.” These reforms must be carried out in the general interest of all Lebanese and in a spirit of responsibility, the Foreign Ministry said.
