France welcomes formation of S. Sudan gov’t

PARIS. The French Foreign Ministry on Monday welcomed the formation of a transitional government in South Sudan, after a compromise was reached by the government and rebel forces.

“This encouraging first step should make it possible to move resolutely forward towards a lasting peace in that country,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The new “national unity” executive is transitional and Paris noted that it will need to move quickly on key reforms as agreed in the peace deal signed by the parties almost two years ago, but which broke down some months later.

“The new government will have a crucial role to play in implementing the reforms agreed in the revitalised peace agreement of 2018, particularly transitional justice, accountability, and the transparency of public finances,” the French statement stressed.

Paris said that it was available to help South Sudan in the new transition phase, including through mechanisms for intergovernmental development
