BERLIN, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas flew to Amman Monday for talks with Jordanian officials on Germany’s contribution to the fight against so-called Islamic State (IS), the foreign ministry said.
Maas will meet with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss conditions related to the German forces based in Al-Azraq base, the ministry added in a statement.
The German forces are launching their operations from Al-Azraq in the fight against IS in Iraq and Syria.
However, the Iraqi parliament demanded exit of all foreign forces on Iraqi soil following the killing of Qassem Soleimani, leader of Iran’s Al-Quds brigade.
The ministry said Maas would visit the German forces who also stopped sorties over Iraqi airspace due to the security uncertainties in Iraq after the killing of Soleimani.
The Social Democrats in the German parliament tabled a bill to end the German air reconnaissance operations by end of March.
