Hospital fire kills eight infants in NE Algeria

ALGIERS, Some eight infants were killed in a fire outbreak inside the maternity ward of a general hospital in northeast Algeria, a national security body announced Tuesday.

Algerian Civil Protection forces were able to storm the hospital at 04:00 a.m. local-time to put out the fire in the maternity ward of Bachir Ben Nacer Hospital in El-Oued Province, Civil Protection said in a statement.

Unfortunately, eight infants died due to the fire, including three from severe wounds and five others from suffocation, the statement said, adding the forces rescued 12 infants and 75 adult patients, mostly pregnant women.

Initial reports indicate that an electrical spark caused the fire, it said, adding the civil protection forces intervened quickly to put out the fire and prevent it from reaching other wards at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Algerian Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui commissioned the Health Minister to investigate main causes of the fire outbreak and provide intensive medical and health care to the wounded victims and other patients.
