Indian security personnel killed, civilian injured in Kashmir gunfight

NEW DELHI, Indian police said Saturday that an officer was killed while a civilian was injured during an encounter between Indian security forces and militants in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir in north India.

According to the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), local police sources said that Constable Mandeep Kumar of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed and a civilian injured as a group of militants fired upon them.

A joint team of Indian forces made up of the CRPF and the local police launched search operation following intelligence inputs about presence of the militants in the area.

The militants, numbering between four and six, managed to escape after killing the trooper and injuring the civilian, police sources said.

Additional forces joined the security team to intensify search operation tracking down the fleeing militants.

New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting and funding the armed groups in Kashmir, claims that Islamabad denies.
