TEHRAN, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami said Saturday Afghanistan should not be a place for regional and international conflicts, but a center of regional cooperation.
Hatami, during a meeting with visiting Afghan Defense Minister Tareq Bahrami, said Afghanistan “should not be a zone for regional and international competition,” but a regional cooperation center, according to official IRNA news agency.
He said Iran was ready to cooperate with Afghanistan in political, economic, cultural, security, defense and military domains.
Hatami said so-called Islamic State (IS) should be eliminated from Afghanistan.
Iran believes IS is a destabilizing tool in the region “and eliminating it is part of our policy,” he asserted.
Bahrami said the Afghan government appreciated the “huge support” provided by Iran for the Afghan people.
He said his visit aimed at paving the ground for peace and security in Afghanistan.
