Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was a “close friend” for the Chinese people, which was outcome of the Kuwaiti leader’s visits to the Asian country.
His Highness the Amir visited China seven times, President Xi said in a speech during summit talks with His Highness the Amir. “His Highness the Amir is the most Gulf leader to visit China,” he added.
President Xi thanked Kuwait for contributions to development in China, noting that Xiamen City Airport was built through Kuwaiti loans.
He meanwhile said China stood firm behind Kuwait during Iraq’s invasion of the Gulf country in 1990.
“We are friends that others can trust during hardships and crises,” he said, and cited His Highness the Amir’s two visits to China when he was a foreign minister during Kuwait liberation war.
“Your Highness, you visited China twice and the Chinese side remained steadfast in supporting endeavors by the Kuwaiti side in defending its sovereignty and national independence,” he said.
Xi said Kuwait was the first Gulf country to establish diplomatic relations with China, and the first to offer loans to Beijing.
On the Arab-China Cooperation Forum, Xi said the forum was an important venue for further cooperation between China and the Arab countries.
His Highness the Amir’s attendance of the Forum, he added, was highly important.
President Xi said Arab-Chinese cooperation would witness a leap in future.
