Kuwait’s long-term strategy secures sustainable water supply – official

CAIRO, Kuwait has been following a long-term strategy aimed at securing sustainable drinking water supplies as well as improving water management, a senior official said Monday.

Khalifa Al-Furaij, Ministry of Electricity and Water’s (MEW) Assistant Undersecretary for Water Operations and Maintenance, said Kuwait’s keenness on water began over 65 years ago because the Gulf country has liminted renewable water resources.

Al-Furaij, addressing the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Water Resources Ministers’ meeting, said Kuwait sought to provide sustainable water supplies through sea water desalination.

Kuwait, he added has been establishing water facilities and networks in addition to laboratories to prevent water contamination.

Future challenges are the limited amount of natural resources coupled with high costs of the production and desalination of sea water.
