Lavrov calls for formulating Russian-US vision for issues of common concern

MOSCOW, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said he expects to hammer out specific proposals to improve Russian-US relations during talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“I hope that today we will be able to hammer out specific proposals aimed at steering Russian-American relations out of the current sad state, in which they ended up for various objective and subjective reasons,” Lavrov said on Tuesday during his reception of visiting US counterpart, reported Russian Tass news agency.

The minister clarified that there were disagreements between Moscow and Washington, which required both “immediate measures and long-term comprehensive solutions.” “We realize that both sides have accumulated numerous suspicions and prejudices. We will not gain anything from that. Mutual tensions will increase risks for our and your security and trigger concern from the global community,” Russia’s top diplomat said.

According to Lavrov, it is time for Russia and the US to start building “a new, more responsible constructive matrix of mutual perception of each other.” “We are ready for that, of course, if our American partners also show interest,” the minister noted.

He added that the intensification of contacts between the two countries top diplomats gave grounds for “certain optimism.” Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Pompeo emphasized that the US President Donald Trump is committed to improving relations with Russia.

“I am here today because President Trump is committed to improving this relationship,” he said.

Pompeo said he eyes common ground for cooperation between the two countries. “I hope that we can find places where we have a set of overlapping interests and can truly begin to build out strong relationships at least on those particular issues,” Pompeo added.

In this regard, he mentioned counterterrorism, arms control, nuclear proliferation and regional conflicts.

“I hope that we can begin to build out our strategic security dialogue as you and I spoke about when we were in Finland a couple of weeks back. And I hope that these good-faith effort on the part of our two nations as directed by President Trump and President Putin will stabilize the relationship and put it back on a trajectory that I think would be good for not only each of our two countries and each of our peoples but for the world as well,” he said.
