Lebanon condemns Israeli air raids on Syria

BEIRUT, Lebanon on Wednesday condemned Israeli air raids a day prior that targeted Syrian territories.

Syria has the legitimate right to defend its land and sovereignty, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said in a press statement.

Beirut called on the international community and the UN Security Council to deplore these raids and Israel’s use of its airspace to launch the attacks.

This act is a breach of UN Security Council resolution 1701, the statement said.

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil has instructed his country’s permanent representative to the UN to submit a complaint at the Security Council on the breach he described as “serious.” “This act poses a threat to the region’s stability and constitutes a danger to the movement of civil aircraft,” added the statement, explaining that the move could have resulted in a “disaster.” On Tuesday, a Syrian military announcement that it had shot down “hostile targets” emanating from Lebanese territory coincided with Israel’s activation of its missile defence system in response to a missile fired from Syria.
