WASHINGTON, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis met with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Kang Kyungwha to discuss the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Pentagon announced.
It said in a statement that Kang “reviewed the Panmunjeom Declaration and the efforts to improve North-South relations while achieving the common goal of denuclearization.
Mattis and Kang shared their hope that the upcoming US-North Korea summit talks scheduled for June 12 would provide a historic opportunity to reach a diplomatic resolution that achieves complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea, the Pentagon noted.
It added that Mattis reaffirmed the “ironclad US commitment to defend the ROK using the full spectrum of US capabilities.
“Both sides pledged continued close coordination to implement North Korea-related United Nations Security Council resolutions and to support ongoing diplomatic engagements,” the statement concluded.
