Opposition party member to run for early Turkish presidential race

ANKARA, Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy head Ozturk Yilmaz on Friday said he intended to run for early presidential elections, due on June 24.

Speaking at a press conference, Yilmaz, who received his party’s full backing for the candidacy, said the country was currently going through a “difficult period.” On Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the change to the date of the elections, which were originally slated for November 2019.
