Pompeo reiterates US opposition to Turkish offensive in N. Syria

WASHINGTON, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke by phone on Wednesday with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu during which he reiterated US opposition to Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria.

He underscored President Donald Trump’s call for the Turkish Government to stop its action in northeast Syria and “to return to a dialogue with the United States on security in northeast Syria,” State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement “The Secretary previewed the upcoming high-level US delegation to Ankara led by Vice President Mike Pence,” according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Treasury Steve Mnuchin warned in remarks to reporters that additional sanctions could be imposed on Turkey “if they don’t institute a ceasefire.” On Monday, the Department of the Treasury designated two ministries and three senior Turkish Government officials “in response to Turkey’s military operations in Syria.”
