MOSCOW, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday described conditions in Syria as complicated and noted that his talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were of special significance.
Russian television quoted President Putin as saying during his meeting with Erdogan in the resort of Sochi, “We understand complexities of the status quo in Syria thus our consultations are necessary.” Putin expressed hope that the “high profile” relationship between Ankara and Moscow would be helpful in tackling the emerging complicated issues in the region.
For his part, Erdogan said his meeting with Putin would pave the way for more detailed discussions on the status quo and efforts aimed at restoring calm to northern Syria.
Turkey has recently launched a wide-scale military operation into northern Syria with the aim to drive out anti-Turkish Kurdish groups and carve out a safe haven for some four million refugees in Turkey.
