Road fatalities saw a 17.4% drop in first nine months of the year

WAM Abu Dhabi, 20 Nov. 2012 (WAM) — The number of deaths caused by traffic accidents in the UAE saw a significant drop of 17.4% during the first nine months of this year; while the number of injuries declined by 7.7% compared with the same period last year, official figures showed.

Brigadier General Ghaith Hassan Al Za’abi, Director General of Traffic Coordination at the Ministry of Interior, noted that the marked drop in road fatalities and injuries reflect the efficient measures applied by the Ministry and Traffic Police to improve road safety; as per the Ministry’s strategy to raise road safety levels and create a safe traffic environment, consistent with international standards.

Al Za’abi called on motorists and road users to abide by traffic rules and regulations, to avoid traffic accidents and the resulting deaths and injuries that endanger lives and damage properties. Adhering to such rules may help them maintain their safety and the safety of others.

Statistics revealed a decrease from 545 to 450 deaths due to traffic accidents during the first nine months of this year; recording a 17.4% drop (95 cases), compared to the same period in 2011. Injuries dipped from 5895 to 5543; recording a 7.7% drop (452 cases), compared to the same period in 2011.

Moreover, the statistics issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Coordination Department indicated an overall significant decrease in the total number of traffic accidents in the UAE during the first nine months of 2012 from 4970 to 4566; recording a drop of 8.1% (404 cases);compared to the same period in 2011.
