RTA launches payment of public transport fare through mobile phones

Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a superb package of e-services capable of enhancing RTA’s contribution to boosting the technological advancements at top-class standards worldwide, through its exhibition platform in Gitex Technology Week 2012.

Commenting on the key new technological services, Mohammed Al Mudharreb, Director of RTA Unified Fare Collection Card, said: “The RTA is showcasing the e-payment of fares of public transport means, such as the metro, public buses and the Water Bus, through some compatible smart phones to be named with the launch of the service anticipated at the beginning of next year.

“Cooperation is in hand with telecom providers, Etisalat and Du, to realize the set objectives of the service through the provision of dedicated sim-cards compatible with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, enabling holders of such compatible smart-phones to avail the service through contactless swiping of their smart-phones over tickets validation machines at the access gates of mass transit systems. The offering will mark the debut of the service across the Middle East.

The New NFC sim-card will be enabled to emulate the functionality of Silver Nol Cards and offer users access to the same privileges and exclusivity vis-a-vis topping up balance and usage. Public transport commuters can move handily across the entry gates without bothering to carry additional cards. Through their mobile smart-phones, commuters can top-up their balances online either through Nol Portal, Tickets Selling Offices in any metro or public bus station, or ATMs of some banks participating in the service, including Emirates NBD,” continued Al Mudharreb.
