Russia seeks war crimes probe of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan

Russia has asked for an investigation into purported “war crimes” committed by Australian troops in Afghanistan.

The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Moscow is highly concerned over leaked defense force documents alleging that Australian soldiers had shot at Afghan civilians in cold blood, including the killing of a boy in 2012.

It urged a “transparent and independent” inquiry into possible war crimes perpetrated by Australian troops in Afghanistan, saying that anybody found to have used “illegal violence” should be brought to justice immediately.

While not a member of NATO, Australia is a staunch US ally and has had troops in Afghanistan since 2002.
