NEW YORK, Russia Tuesday vetoed a US draft UN resolution over the formation of a UN investigation committee to investigate suspected use of chemical weapons in Syria.
Russia and Bolivia voted against the resolution while China abstained. The remaining 13 Security Council members, including Kuwait, supported the draft resolution.
This is Russia’s 12th veto against a UN draft resolution concerning Syria, and the sixth regarding the chemical weapons’ use in the Arab country.
The draft resolution called for forming the committee for a one-year term, and could be extended by the Security Council.
The US-tabled draft resolution condemned in strongest terms the use of chemical weapons in Syria, specially in Douma.
It expressed frustration at the killing of civilians and determination to punish those behind the attacks.
It calls on all parties to allow full access of a OPCW fact-finding commission.
