Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Friday top class performance at the World Cup, which he said “has many surprises.” Victory will always be for the strongest team, Putin said in a meeting with former football stars at the Kremlin, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Surprises at the World Cup, he added, made football the most attractive sport for millions of people around the globe.
Putin said tens of thousands of fans flocked to Russia and contributed to “enormous happiness” among Russian citizens, who were dealing with spectators as friends. “We are doing our best so the fans feel they are in their home.” The Kremlin leader hoped the fans’ travel among Russian cities allow them to get acquainted with Russian culture and traditions.
Among attendees to meeting were Germany’s Lothar Matthaus, Holland’s Marco Van Basten, Britain’s Rio Ferdinand, Denmark’s Peter Schmeichel, Uruguay’s Diego Forlan, Mexico’s Jorge Campos and Croatia’s Zvonimir Boban.
