Serbia beat Costa Rica 1-0 in the opening match of their Group E at 45,000-seater Samara Arena on Sunday as part of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The only goal was scored by Serbia captain Aleksander Kolarov through a left-footed superb free-kick in the 56th minute.
Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who plays for Real Madrid, couldn’t reach the stunning strike by Kolarov, 32, from 25-yards-out midway.
The Serbians controlled most of the game as Costa Rica used a defensive strategy and counter-attacks, granting the former a deserved win.
The first half ended scoreless, but Navas faced a barrage of challenges in the second.
Costa Rica’s performance was just as good in statistics to the Serbian team in attempts at the goal and average ball possession. The Serbian team took many positive outcomes from this match other than the win, as they showed how critical it is to perform as a team, while not underestimating the opposing team.
Costa Rica and Serbia were drawn in a tough group along with five-time World Cup champion Brazil and Switzerland.
Serbia will next face Switzerland and Costa Rica will take on Brazil both on Friday.
