Sudan opposition confirms transition row with generals

KHARTOUM, Sudan’s Freedom and Change Declaration Forces, the umbrella organization of the opposition, said Friday they have divergent views with Military Transitional Council (MTC) over transitional arrangements.

Speaking to KUNA, Madani Abbas, a member of the opposition group, said the MTC is opposed to their demand for a civilian sovereign council including army generals.

But, the MTC insists that it would retain sovereign authorities while civilians could hold the posts of prime minister and all cabinet ministers.

Both sides had announced an agreement over transitional arrangements, and had set up a joint action committee.

Earlier this month, the Sudanese army deposed President Omar Al-Bashir, who remained in power for 30 years, following months of popular protests against his regime.

The military then established a military council to run this Arab country for a transitional period of two years.

Demonstrators have been staging protests outside the military headquarters and are insisting that power be handed over to a civilian government.
