TEHRAN, Iran on Thursday sounded the alarm that it could quit the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), if the US scrapped the 2015 nuclear deal.
“Iran is serious about withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), if Trump scraps the 2015 JCPOA,” Iran’s Expediency Council Secretary-General Mohsen Rezai told a news conference.
Iran has paid a lot for the nuclear agreement, but it is not ready to pay anymore, he said, adding that Tehran’s possible NPT withdrawal would be legal.
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had cautioned that his country could pull out of the NPT, whish is mainly designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, if Washington imposed sanctions on Tehran or quit the nuclear agreement.
US President Donald Trump had stated that his country would scrap the 2015 nuclear deal on May 12, in case no stricter restrictions were imposed on Iran.
