KUALA LUMPUR, Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn issued a statement to stop his sister, Thai Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya, from running for the Prime Minister post during the next elections scheduled for March 24th.
“She still retains her status and position as a member of the Chakri dynasty,” the King said. Ubolratana is the first born of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.
However, she relinquished her royal titles when she married American Peter Jensen in 1972, living in Massachusetts for 26 years, but she is still treated like the rest of the royal family. Then after the divorce she returned to Thailand in 1998.
“Involvement of a high-ranking member of the royal family in politics, in anyway, is against the nation’s traditions, customs and culture and is therefore considered improper and highly inappropriate,” the statement said.
Therefore, the King felt as though the princess violated the constitution and tradition.
Ubolratana is nominated by the Thai Raksa Chart Party for Prime Minister, although she may possibly be removed from the list of candidates to the general election commission, which will be announced next on February 15th.
