Trump wants NATO member states to raise defence spending immediately

US President Donald Trump Wednesday criticised Germany for its reliance on Russian energy.

“What good is NATO if Germany is paying Russia billions of dollars for gas and energy?,” he said in a tweeter message after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the sideline of a NATO summit in Brussels.

“Why are their only 5 out of 29 (NATO) countries that have met their commitment? The U.S. is paying for Europe?’s protection, then loses billions on Trade. Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025,” Trump tweeted.

“Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed media reports that during the NATO summit meeting in Brussels today, Trump called for an increase of defence spending by NATO members to 4% of GDP.

“During the president’s remarks today at the Nato summit he suggested that countries not only meet their commitment of 2% of their GDP on defence spending, but that they increase it to 4%. The president raised this same issue when he was at Nato last year,” she said in a statement.
