Turkey, Iraq eye closer ties

ANKARA, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his visiting Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al-Jaafari on Friday discussed ways of promoting and developing bilateral relations.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Cavusoglu said the Iraqi minister is in Ankara to attend a joint economic commission meeting.

He added that he and Al-Jaafari frequently speak by phone and meet at many international meetings.

Bilateral relations, regional issues and the current situation in Iraq are mainly addressed during such meetings, Cavusoglu said, underlining the significant time of the Iraqi minister’s visit.

He added that they also had discussed cooperation against terrorism and Turkey’s support for Iraq’s reconstruction efforts.

On his part, the Iraqi foreign minister hoped that the bilateral meeting would lead to wiping out any hindrances in bilateral relations.

Al-Jaafari arrived in Ankara earlier on Thursday for an official visit to Turkey, where he has already met the parliament speaker, apart from his Turkish counterpart. He is also expected to meet the minister of economy later today.
