Turkey, Russia launch construction of Akkuyu nuclear power plant

ISTANBUL, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday laid the cornerstone of the first power unit for the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey.

In a speech during a ceremony, Erdogan has stressed the utmost importance of the Akkuyu plant, affirming that it is a strategic project for Turkey which covers 10 percent of electricity needs in Turkey.

He added that Turkey witnessed today a historic moment through developing the country and enhancing cooperation with Russia in energy.

He noted that the first phase of the plant’s operation will begin in 2023, the year which will coincide with the first centenary of the foundation of the republic of Turkey.

For his part, Putin lauded the plant, saying that it will be environment friendly and safe.

He vioced confidence that the whole country will feel the effect from the operation of the new high-tech nuclear power plant.
