Turkey’s opposition party nominates candidate for presidency

ISTANBUL, Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has nominated lawmaker Muharrem Ince for the forthcoming presidential elections due on June 24.

Ince has been in Turkish parliament since 2002, representing his hometown of Yalova in the west of the country.

The party said the latest move aims at “ensuring equality and just and independent administration, and rejuvenating democracy and secularism in the country”.

Last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for parliamentary and presidential elections more than a year earlier than planned for June 24.
