The United States welcomed Afghanistan’s offer of a ceasefire to Taliban militants to the Afghani people to celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the State Department said on Thursday.
The U.S. “welcomes President Ghani’s offer of a temporary ceasefire between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to allow the Afghan people to celebrate Eid al-Fitr without fear of violence,” the State Department said. “The Afghan government’s offer of a temporary ceasefire underscores its commitment to peace as both a national and religious responsibility,” according to the State Department. “We stand with the Afghan people as they lay the foundation for an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process.” U.S. forces in the country will respect the ceasefire with the Taliban but will continue counterterrorism operations against the so-called Islamic State and al-Qaeda militants, the State Department said.
